Fitting Sprockets |
|
Sprocket refers to the cog on the rear wheel hub of a motorcycle. Sprockets can be swapped simply, unbolt the old one and replace with the new. However here are a couple of tips. It is important to remember to clean the bolt threads with a wire brush removing dirt and old loctite. Clean the mounting area and fit new sprocket to the carrier. Slide bolts into place and apply a drop of loctite to each thread before tightening each nut. Chain Gang sprockets are finished in a painted coating and this layer can deteriorate between bolt and sprocket leaving a gap in between and result in loose bolts. The layer of paint can be removed by scrapping it clear before fitting or after first ride remembering to follow the same steps as before. It is wise to check sprocket bolts regularly, as time can vibrate them loose. Some original equipment sprocket bolts are made of low grade steels or worse, aluminium requires replacement after little time due to stretched bolt threads. Aftermarket replacement bolts made from high tensile strength steels and quality lock-nuts are a cheap worthwhile investment. (Available here)
